Deal of the Day
Kindle has a fantastic promo ongoing for cookbooks. I am not a huge fan of e-cookbooks, that is one genre I prefer a real book in my hands. BUT – for under 5.00 I will consider an e-book version. Here are some titles I already have and use often. There are many more available, so click the button for the full list.
Instant Pot Miracle 4.99
This is my go-to Instant Pot cook book. I use the tables in the back all the time and a few recipes are standard in our family’s rotation now – especially the ribs.
The Baking Bible 4.99
Wowsers. This is a 30.00 hard cover classic by the queen of baking, Rose Beranbaum.
Midwest Made 3.99
I have been eyeing this 4.5 star book for a while, but didn’t what to fork out 27.00 for it. I just picked up the Kindle version – because I am all about Midwest cooking.
Beard on Bread 4.99
This is a classic. I picked up my hardcover back when it was first published – in 1973 if you can believe it. It remains THE bread book IMO.
Moosewood Restaurant Favorites 4.99
Another blast from my past. I love The Moosewood vegetarian cuisine.
Fiction
Have Your Seen Luis Velez 1.99 Audible
I LOVE all of Catherine Ryan Hyde’s fiction and, that said, I especially appreciated this novel. One of my book clubs also read it and loved it. You can purchase the Audible version for 1.99 too.
The Mothers 7.99 Audible
On NPR’s “best book” list for 2016, and a finalist for several major literary awards, this book has been on my list for years — and now it is also on my Kindle. I am about 30% through the book and love it so far.
The Beekeeper of Aleppo Audible for 7.99
From me: I just finished this book yesterday and LOVED it. The story and characters were seared into my heart. This novel is one of the most compassionate books I have read that describe the complexity and horrors of PTSD and refugees.
From the publisher:
The unforgettable love story of a mother blinded by loss and her husband who insists on their survival as they undertake the Syrian refugee trail to Europe.
Nuri is a beekeeper; his wife, Afra, an artist. They live a simple life, rich in family and friends, in the beautiful Syrian city of Aleppo–until the unthinkable happens. When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape. But what Afra has seen is so terrible she has gone blind, and so they must embark on a perilous journey through Turkey and Greece towards an uncertain future in Britain. On the way, Nuri is sustained by the knowledge that waiting for them is Mustafa, his cousin and business partner, who has started an apiary and is teaching fellow refugees in Yorkshire to keep bees.
As Nuri and Afra travel through a broken world, they must confront not only the pain of their own unspeakable loss, but dangers that would overwhelm the bravest of souls. Above all, they must journey to find each other again.
Moving, powerful, compassionate, and beautifully written, The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a testament to the triumph of the human spirit. It is the kind of book that reminds us of the power of storytelling.
Historical Fiction
One For the Blackbird, One For the Crow 1.99 Audible
I just bought this one as it has been on my TBR list.
From the publisher: Wyoming, 1876. For as long as they have lived on the frontier, the Bemis and Webber families have relied on each other. With no other settlers for miles, it is a matter of survival. But when Ernest Bemis finds his wife, Cora, in a compromising situation with their neighbor, he doesn’t think of survival. In one impulsive moment, a man is dead, Ernest is off to prison, and the women left behind are divided by rage and remorse.
Losing her husband to Cora’s indiscretion is another hardship for stoic Nettie Mae. But as a brutal Wyoming winter bears down, Cora and Nettie Mae have no choice but to come together as one family—to share the duties of working the land and raising their children. There’s Nettie Mae’s son, Clyde—no longer a boy, but not yet a man—who must navigate the road to adulthood without a father to guide him, and Cora’s daughter, Beulah, who is as wild and untamable as her prairie home.
Bound by the uncommon threads in their lives and the challenges that lie ahead, Cora and Nettie Mae begin to forge an unexpected sisterhood. But when a love blossoms between Clyde and Beulah, bonds are once again tested, and these two resilient women must finally decide whether they can learn to trust each other—or else risk losing everything they hold dear.
Paper Wife 1.99
Fantastic historical fiction set in the 1920’s and covering the Chinese immigrant community in San Francisco and Oakland.
Golden Poppies 4.99 Kindle, 1.99 Audible
Laila Ibrahim’s newest best-selling novel. I just started it, but loved all her other books so have high hopes for this one too.
Memoir
The Moment of Lift by Melinda Gates 7.99 Audible
This has been on my list for a while and I picked it up cheap today.
Born a Crime
One of my all time favorite memoirs. Laugh out loud funny, and bring you to tears poignant. A must-read IMO.
Mystery/Suspense
Burying the Honeysuckle Girls 7.99 Audible, 3.99 Kindle
A solid suspense/mystery/family drama. Not scary suspense, but family secret suspense. Nice book to read for Alabama if you are doing a 50-state challenge.
Agatha Christie Collection 1.99
A 28 book Agatha Christie collection for 1.99. Pretty darn good if you are a fan of her mysteries. Scroll down to see a few more mystery deals.
Still Life by Louise Penny 7.99 Kindle – not a super deal, but a good price
With libraries closed this is a good time to snag the first book if the Inspector Gamache series on the cheap. Most people love this series and my dad and I are true fans. I have plans to explore Quebec in my van largely due to this series.
PJ Tracy Monkeewrench series #9 and 10. Both 7.99 Audible deals
I love the Monkeewrench gang and so does my dad – this series crosses generations. It is a fabulous, Minnesota based mystery series with a fun, funky cast of characters. Some serial murders and terrorism plots make up most f the themes. The first books in the series were written by a mom-daughter team, but sadly the mother, PJ Lambrecht, passed away after book 7 and daughter, Tracy Lambrecht is now continuing the series alone.
Science Fiction
Non-Fiction
Being Mortal 7.99 Audible
This book – wow, this book. All I can say is everyone should read this book because we are all mortal. I read this book before my mother became gravely ill and I credit it in part for helping me provide my mother a “good” death.
It also changed the way I approach my own life. Seriously – it is an important book with an important message.
